Learn the essentials of preparing and working with a natural dyebath and how to use mordants and modifiers before and after dyeing to achieve a range of shades from the same dyebath.
Working with an old and exotic dyestuff we’ll cover the key aspects of dyeing yarn with plants; fibre preparation and mordanting, sourcing dyestuffs, preparing and using the dyebath and safety. We’ll also discuss over-dyeing to create complex colours, record-keeping and other tips and explore the surrounding area for local dye plants.
Participants will take away comprehensive notes and a sample card of yarns dyed in class.
Materials: All materials will be provided but please wear dark clothes (or an apron) and closed shoes that can handle a splash of dye.
