The Textile Department at Shetland College: UHI is hosting this full day class teaching basic machine knitting techniques which will allow you to make a 2 colour patterned envelope cushion cover. The class will be taught by knitwear designer and Assistant Textile Technician for the Textile Facilitation Unit (TFU), Helen Whitham.
We will begin with an overview of the Brother Electro-Knit domestic knitting machine and introduce the basic techniques for machine knitting. Then utilising the machines pre-installed patterns from the Brother Stitch World 1 pattern book you will choose a 2 colour design which will form the main body of your cushion. The class will include techniques such as creating a basic hem, knitting with two colours and how to construct the finished cushion.
Materials: All materials are provided. There will be the option to purchase a cushion pad at a small extra cost.
Tea and Coffee will be provided. Lunch is not included but can be bought on site from the Briggistanes Canteen or bring your own packed lunch.
Skill level: This class is suitable for absolute beginners with no experience of machine knitting and for novices who have their own machine and would like a refresher course in basic machine knitting techniques.
Transport: Number 6 bus leaving Lerwick Viking Bus Station at 8.40am and arriving Shetland College: UHI at 8.50am. Or local taxi to share.
